I am the 4th generation of my family to operate a dairy business in the Milawa area. My great grandparents established an 80ha mixed farming business on the outskirts of Milawa in the late 1800's. Like most farms in the district the main customer was the gold miner in the nearby hills trying to make their fortune.
With the end of the goldrush local farms banded together to form the Milawa butter factory. Ultimately this local company became part of Murray Goulburn in the70’s .
Our dairy has a milking area of about 100ha which is supported by out blocks, leased and agistment land. We have acquired over 400megs of water entitlement over the years which enables us to irrigate 55ha of permanent pasture plus some summer crop.
Our business underwent a major change in June 2020 with Kerrie and Brenton Gray and their 2 young boys joining our business. Last season they milked over 300 cows through the 20 aside swing over dairy, even with stall gates and cup removers, a tremendous effort.
The arrival of the Gray's also signalled the beginning of our supplying Fonterra with them previously milking almost in the shadow of the Stanhope factory. This also presented me with the chance to become part of the Suppliers’ Council. I felt it was an opportunity to make a positive contribution, although I am a pretty green recruit I will be doing my best to achieve something for all of us.
