With my wife Kate, we run 2 properties – Home is at Ringarooma and Mountain View (Winnaleah) is leased from Kate’s father. I grew up on a 3rd generation family dairy farm in Carbunup River in WA and moved with Kate to Tasmania in 1997.
Our home farm now is farmed using Biological and Organic farming principles. We have been on this path since 2008.
In total both our farms have 1,440 cows over 1140 ha. We purchased our home farm in 2001 which was at the time 153 ha. We are predominately spring calving (90%), mostly Holstein with some Jersey cross.
Both dairies are fully automated, one person operated 60 Bale De Laval milking systems.
About a third of the land is irrigated – from winter filled dams, irrigation schemes or licenced direct takes from rivers. Both farms rear all heifer replacements with the home farm also rearing some dairy beef, and Mountain View growing maize and potatoes.
I also like to give time to other roles, and currently I am the Ringarooma School and Districts Show Committee Treasurer, a member of the local fire brigade, the North East Lions Club and the North East Dairy Advisory Group.
